Stop These 6 Negative Mindsets That Make Entrepreneurs Miserable
Being an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart. Sleepless nights, constant stress, and wearing multiple hats are all common occurrences. From the outside, it may appear that everything is rainbows and sunshine, but ask even the most successful entrepreneurs if it was easy, and they will undoubtedly shake their heads and smile.
So, how do you stay sane during your entrepreneurial journey? The solution is simple: be happy. When you enjoy what you do, happiness follows. However, there are some things that will hold you back. So, if you stop doing these eight things, you will be a happy entrepreneur.
1. Seeking approval from others.
It is critical that you learn to trust your instincts and make decisions that affect your business on your own. No matter how fantastic and feasible your ideas are, there will always be those who oppose them if you seek approval.
We naturally want to please everyone, especially our friends and family, but unless they are in the trenches with you and share the same vision, their advice will only stress you out and lead to poor business decisions.
2. Assigning blame to others.
When it all hits the fan – and it will – it's all too easy to point the finger at someone or something else. As an entrepreneur, you are ultimately accountable for everything that occurs within your company. Even if an employee makes a huge blunder, you are still liable. You made the hiring decision, so now it's up to you to patch the holes and repair the ship before it sinks.
Jamil Rahman, a fellow entrepreneur and the CEO of Aucto, once told me, "The sooner you own up to your mistake, the sooner you can take action to correct it." This single piece of advice can save you a lot of headaches and stress.
3. Lack of self-confidence.
What is one characteristic that all successful entrepreneurs share? They all believe in themselves; they are certain that they can win at anything and everything.
If you have doubts about your abilities, those negative thoughts will take over and defeat you. Confidence and positive thinking are powerful combinations that can help you achieve any goal you set for yourself. Napoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich, concluded, "Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve."
4. Complaints
Complaining will never help you achieve your goals. It's a complete waste of time, and the longer you complain about something, the longer it will take to find a solution to the problem. Entrepreneurship is not for you if you want a stress-free career.
There will be many obstacles in your path that will stress you out, and you will most likely fall a few times – failure is very possible. Complaining is a productivity killer that will seriously disrupt your goals and focus. Be tough and prepared to face challenges.
5. Aversion to change.
As an entrepreneur, you are constantly subjected to change. A shift in company direction as a result of a pivot, a shift in location, or even a shift in the industry. When you overcome your fear of change and embrace it, you open the door to happiness.
I'll give you an example: before starting my online marketing consulting business, I worked in several industries. I wasn't happy, so I thought about it. What I realized was that the only aspect of my ventures that I truly enjoyed was the marketing aspect, so I dropped everything and founded Market Domination Media®. Was it frightening at first? Yes, but it turned out to be a great move – And it would not have happened if I had been afraid of change.
6. Believing that you will always win.
Is David Ortiz going up to bat every time expecting to hit a home run? Is Tom Brady expecting a touchdown pass on every offensive play? No. While they are confident in their abilities, they understand that they will not hit home runs or throw touchdown passes every time they step on the field.
Entrepreneurs must approach each situation with the understanding that they cannot win every time. While confidence is important, it must be balanced with a dose of reality. If you expect to win every time, your first defeat will be devastating and demotivating.
